Considering the amount of sensitive information that can be found within a document, it’s important to know how to redact a PDF file. Using redaction allows you to share sensitive information without the risk of revealing too much. In the digital era, redaction is far easier than it has ever been.

One of the main benefits of the PDF format is file security. When you use redaction, you’ll permanently remove information from your document. It’s a good idea to back up a master copy of your file before redacting any information. This will avoid accidentally erasing pertinent data.

You’ll need to use a PDF editor to remove any content from a document. An application like Soda PDF has an easy to use redaction tool. This article will help you learn how to redact a PDF so you can add that extra touch of professionalism to your work.

Soda PDF provides two methods for redaction.

 

How to redact a PDF manually

 

 

You can choose to select parts of your document to redact. You can apply redaction to any part of your document including text, images and annotations.

Soda PDF will redact only the areas you select. You can redact a part of an image, leaving the rest. You can go as specific as the letters between words.

Below are the instructions on how to redact a PDF by hand.

  1. Open SECURE AND SIGN.
  2. Click the Create option under Redaction

 

  1. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the cursor to select the area you would like to redact.

 

 

The area that will be redacted will be outlined in red. This area is “marked” for redaction. Once applied, you cannot resize it or change it. If an error was made, delete the marked area and reapply it.

  1. Click on Edit Mode.
  2. Right-click on the area marked for redaction.
  3. Choose Remove.

 

 

You can mark multiple areas of your PDF for redaction. The create option remains active until you turn it off or choose to use a different feature.

  1. Choose Apply to finalize your redaction.

 

 

You will see a popup advising you that Soda PDF will now save your document. You will be unable to recover any information that is redacted from your file. Double check your PDF to make sure you’ve redacted the correct content.

  1. Click OK.

 

 

Soda PDF will now redact the information in your file. You’ll see marked areas turn into black bars.

 

 

How to use search and redact

 

 

You can use the search feature in Soda PDF to look for keywords and redact them. It will scan your PDF looking for any text that matches your search term. This is particularly useful when trying to figure out how to redact a PDF file with many pages.

  1. Open SECURE AND SIGN.
  2. Choose Search and Redact.

 

You can also get there from the search feature.

  1. Open the search section (or hold down CTRL + F).
  2. Click on the Search and Redact icon.

 

 

  1. Enter your keyword into the Search bar
  2. Press the Enter key or click the magnifying glass icon.

 

 

  1. Check the boxes to mark the results for redaction.
    1. Review the marked areas to make sure everything is ok.
  2. When you are ready to proceed, click CREATE.

 

 

Once you have selected the text, you can review it.

  1. Click Apply to redact your keywords.

 

 

You will see a popup advising you that redaction will permanently remove the information from your document.

  1. Click OK.

 

 

You are now ready to continue working on your document.
