Instead, curb your expectations and be realistic. Set a small, easily achievable goal first. Then, build out from that success.

 

An example could be running/jogging/walking 20 minutes a day instead of running 3 miles a day. Or maybe skipping carbs one meal rather than going full-on Keto (the Keto flu…ouch).

Call someone else fat, lazy, or stupid and you’ll get punched in the face!

 

But call yourself any of those words and it only reinforces the negative image of yourself. It might even feel good to do it since it gives you an excuse for failing!

 

Negative self-talk is the #1 killer of good habit-forming. You slip up, then get down on yourself, then you get down on yourself for getting down on yourself. Next thing you know, you’re eating a meat lovers pizza and crying over Lord of the Rings for the 3rd time since Tuesday.

 

Turn it on its head by throwing the word BUT in there. This will help you to always look on the positive side. Here are a few examples:

 

“Man, I cheated on my diet, but I was good all last week. I know I can do it again!”

  3. Accomplish even a small part of your goal: On days you can’t do the full good habit, do at least a little bit. Can’t run? Give me 10 pushups. Can’t go to yoga class? Meditate for 10 minutes at home. And that goes for bad habits too. Smoked a cigarette at the bar? That’s not a license to smoke 10 more. ONLY 1! Just because it’s not optimal doesn’t mean it’s not beneficial. You’re slowly becoming a new you.
  4. Identify the reason for failure and eliminate it: Steve Jobs realized he failed because he wasn’t dedicated enough. MJ failed because he couldn’t shoot at a high level. When you know what you’re up against, you can fight it. If you failed your diet because you reached into the freezer for some ice cream, then GET RID OF THE ICE CREAM! You clearly can’t resist.
